For a natural high, smoke some bees!

For a natural high, smoke some bees!

It is World Honey Bee day, and here at Hunt’s cider we are celebrating all things black and yellow.

On our mixed farm near Stoke Gabriel we have 19 acres of apple trees stretching across 3 orchards. To help us achieve a bumper yield of apples we have a selection of bee hives that take up residence. The hives are home to anywhere between 20,000 and 60,000 bees depending on how developed they are.

Bees are exceptionally good pollinators and according to Albert Einstein ‘if bees disappeared from the earth mankind would only have 4 years left to live.’ They utilise the apple blossom to make their honey and in turn help us produce a great crop of apples in a sustainable manor.

Mr Gerry Stuart is our resident bee keeper and looks after the majority of our hives on the farm. He is also the bee keeper for Paignton Zoo, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust and Torbay economic development agency at Cockington Court. He is Vice Chairman for the Torbay Bee Keepers Association and Director of the B4 project… so he is constantly busy, buzzing around South Devon! He is happy to do group talks, so if you would like to know any more about bees please get in contact.
